ALLEGRA SLEEP

Jewelry

Allegra Sleep was born in Nicaragua just as things were heating up and ready to erupt into the Nicaraguan Revolution which ousted Somoza. She was in her first group show at the American Embassy in Managua at age two. Allegra has drawn and painted her whole life. She grew up in Latin America and has traveled the world. A stateside move brought Allegra to the art community of Taos, N.M. in 1989, where the Hispanic culture and art made her feel right at home.
Allegra graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors in Liberal Arts, focusing in English Literature and Media Arts. She has since expanded her art to include jewelry design. Allegra works with primarily organic materials. Her jewelry design is inspired by Wilma's "rocks" on the Flintstones, Frida Kahlo's jewelry collection, the artist's travels in Latin America, and her love affair with the past. Allegra weaves these elements into deceptively understated one-of-a-kind chokers, necklaces, multi-strands, and earrings.
